Is Stress getting you down?
Humans have been feeling stressed-out ever since adrenaline energy surges allowed our ancestors to outrun attackers or triumph in battle.
Compared to today's multitasking, time-challenged, cyber-stressing baby boomers, however, cave people led relatively stress-free lifestyles. "Between family and financial demands, working overtime, rapidly changing technologies, corporate downsizing, and caregiving for older relatives, people in midlife are struggling with more stressors than previous generations have ever experienced," says stress management expert Peter Lambrou, Ph.D., a clinical and consulting psychologist at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California.
Guide to Stress Relief
Did you know that your ability to handle stress greatly influences your health and longevity? Learn smart strategies for mastering stress now to enhance your future quality of life.
Positive Actions on your part
One of the easiest ways to control stress involves visualizing positive situations and beautiful scenes. For instance, visualizing a loved one or even a favorite pet has been found to lower blood pressure and induce the relaxation response, the opposite of the stress response.
Simple deep breathing exercises, such as the one below, have also proved to bust stress. Here's how:
Inhale slowly and as completely as possible as you expand first the belly (below the navel), then the diaphragm, and finally the chest.
Hold for a few moments before exhaling.
Exhale in reverse pattern, slowly emptying the chest, the diaphragm, and then the belly.
Hold for a few moments before inhaling again.
Make sure that you exhale as fully and completely as you inhale.
Repeat 10 times the first few times you practice and then build up to a point where you feel comfortable with the process.
If you find yourself feeling stressed or anxious, continue to breathe like this until you feel more in control or more relaxed. If at any time you begin to feel stressed again, just start your breathing technique and remember how much more in control and relaxed it makes you feel.
